The
European Starling, whose North American population is now over 200 million
strong, are all descended from 100 birds introduced in New York City's
Central Park during 1890 through 1891. This species was deliberately
released by one Eugene Scheifflin, who sought to introduce all the birds
mentioned by Shakespeare in his writings. Conditioned by centuries of
living in European cities, starlings found North American cities to
be easily inhabitable. By 1942, starlings had spread all the way across
the continent to the Pacific shore. In some areas, European Starlings
are now the most abundant bird species.
DAMAGE AND CONCERN
This bird competes
with virtually all native cavity-nesting birds, especially the Northern
Flicker, but also the red-headed Woodpecker, Eastern Bluebird, Purple
Martin, Tree Swallow, and Wood duck. Aggressive starlings regularly
evict native species and appropriate their nest sites.
CONTROL
Excluding starlings
from nest boxes is a major preoccupation of nest monitors. Trapping
and elimination may be necessary. Another approach would be to remove
starling eggs and replacing them with marbles.
